A note about millinery plumes: In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, bird feathers were widely used to create elaborate hats for affluent women. Ornithologists wrote descriptions of the massacres of bird colonies and horrific scenes of violence to supply the elaborate feathered hats that were all the rage. Scandalized by the dark truth, women began to consider the true costs of being fashionable.
